“Sustainable proposals for a changing country The Development Studio started with a field trip by the research group students and tutors to the south-eastern European country of Romania.
The target of the studio is the proposal of urban redevelopments, planning strategies and new settlements in ‘problematic’ or ‘potential’ specified areas in the case study of a particular city (Bucharest or Constanta).
The specific case studies and the principles of the urban redevelopment and the new settlements will be defined during and after the field trip.”

By manipulating the area of the old railway, our aim is to create a balance between the uses of the whole area (MILITARI), in terms of social status, volume and densities.
Continuing with our attempt of mixing uses, we tried to define the form of this idea. By using a module to define the volume of the hybrid of uses, we determined the height of this form for each area that we are using, to create finally a surface, that will fill this area as an intermediate space and a mixture of uses. Each area will have the average of the characteristics of the surrounding areas (both in terms of use and size of building _module and hybrid of uses). By specifying the flows of transportation and people movement, we will manipulate this surface to reach the final form.

As an attempt to create a ‘average’ condition for the area, the density and height of buildings would be important. The categorization of the volumes would help to create the ‘hybrid’ buildings, using as a module the smallest volume of the area. The hybrids are created by choosing the average height of the side areas(on the two sides of the areas the hybrid would be applied) and the combination of the uses.

After applying the rules of the hybrid buildings and the uses, the flows of the area would generate the buildings. In some cases, the buildings would have passable roofs, generated from the average heights of the surrounding buildings.
The buildings along the rail host mainly leisure, commercial and culture uses, and are interrupted by small green areas.
